Season 2024-2025

  • Premier League 17th
  • FA Cup 3rd Round
  • Carabao Cup 4th Round

Welcome to the latest post covering my FM22 journey with Ipswich Town. After last seasons success in getting promoted to the Premier League by being crowned Champions of the EFL Championship we start our journey of survival in the top flight right here.

After 3 seasons of working under a very strict budget the board have made available £36m to spend in the transfer market however I am not about to go mad in the market instead I was looking to lay the foundations of the clubs future by being prudent with the finances whilst attempting to avoid relegation this season.

I have a plan in my head to stabilise the club this season (2024-2025) whilst maintaining our place in the top flight before going through a a rebuilding process next season (2025-2026) with the aim of challenging for a European qualification place in the 2026-2027 season.

So with the number 1 priority this season being survival I have decided to change our formation from 433 to a 352 formation for the season ahead before reverting back to the 433 the following season. I hear you say why ? After all the 433 is the reason we are in the top flight but I feel that if we are to survive the drop this season we will have to be a little more prepared to baton down the hatches.

Whilst shoring up the defensive side of our game I also feel it necessary to use two forwards to try and make the most of our counter attacks. Yes I could have just left our 433 system in place and cracked on but from my past experience on gaining success early on it can sometimes become somewhat boring leaving me disconnected with the save so I have made the decision to shake things up a little.

The transfer window opened and I made my move however I only spent just over £13m of the clubs money on bringing the following players in to the club. Mark Travers (25) (Goalkeeper)from AFC Bournemouth for £350,000 followed by the signing of Brazilian midfielder Liziero (26) from Sao Paulo for £190,000. Another midfielder German Christopher Scott (22) joins from Fortuna Dusseldorf on a free transfer. Next I went out and signed two forwards, the first Colombian Juan ‘Chuco’ Hernandez (25) who joins us for a fee of £8.25m. Our 5th and final signing was Serbian forward Dejan Joveljic (25) who joins for £4.4m from La Galaxy.

This is my first phase of building a squad who can compete at an higher level that can take us in to European Competition over the next few seasons.

To Be Realistic

I have decided that to make the save more interesting, I will not be making unrealistic signings for a club of Ipswich stature meaning that I won’t be making the obvious wonderkid signings in the transfer market instead I will be looking at the club and sign players who are more likely to join the club in real life if Ipswich were in the position that the club is in my game World. Whilst this is down to my opinion I think it will give the save some longevity creating more of a struggle instead of dominating the game too early…… let’s see how it goes and hope to survive the sack along the way.

Job Offers

Already in the save I have turned down offers to speak to other clubs. Up to the end of this the 4th season I have had offers from PSV Eindoven, Napoli, Sevilla and Manchester United in that order.

2024-2025 Summary

EFL Championship Final Table 2024-2025

Our opening game in the Premier League was a 1-1 draw with Brentford which was so close to being a 1-0 win with the Bee’s grabbing a late equaliser to cancel out Juan ‘Chuco’ Hernandez debut goal.

We did grab a win in our 2nd game back in the top flight with a 1-0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers thanks to another Chuco goal. It would be our only win in the first 6 games with draws against Leeds and Burnley and defeats against Chelsea and Manchester City.

By the start of December we were in 14th place in the table thanks to wins against Leeds United and Aston Villa but a heavy schedule took its toll on us and by the end of the year we were in 17th place in the table.

A 3rd Round FA Cup exit at the hands of Arsenal at the Emirates was followed by a 4-3 victory over West Ham that included an hat-trick from ‘Cucho’ who has settled in to the club since joining.

‘Cucho’ Hernandez finished the season with 22 goals and 10 assists in 42 appearances by far his best return so far of his career. It was the Colombian forward who we have to thank for keeping us in the Premier League with his goals.

Juan ‘Cucho’ Hernandez

Defeats against Liverpool, Chelsea and Newcastle on the bounce made our game against Watford a six pointer and we we would be without top scorer Chuco so we needed someone to step up. Let me introduce you to 18 year old central defender Steve Lowe, Lowe was the top prospect in our very first youth intake in 2022 and is now a first team regular making 41 appearances and scoring 5 goals in the Premier League this season including 2 goals in the six pointer against Watford giving us a 2-0 win. A priceless victory in our bid to stay in the top tier.

Steve Lowe

By the middle of May we had dodged relegation by 10 points using the 352 formation throughout the season. Next season will see us revert back to the 433 that got us to the Premier League.

352 Best XI
Squad Statistics

Another season comes to an end and although we finished in 17th place just one place above the drop zone the season was really enjoyable scrapping for every point as made it the best to date including winning both the Championship and League 1. This season will also be the last of an era with many of the first team squad parting company with the club has I look to rebuild the squad. I touched on it above, I will be looking to to make the signings as realistic as possible as if it was real life so I will be looking at bringing in some experience instead of flooding the squad with wonderkids. I will be looking to improve on this season by targeting a mid table finish even though the boards expectation is to again fight bravely against relegation. Thank you for reading and hope you will return for my next blog post that will be a transfer special.
